After two weeks of bitter rivals and tough losses, Quikky’s
entered the game trying to keep the drama behind them. However, the
ever pleasant match up between Foundation and Quikky’s would
quickly turn into a shady affair. Despite Coach Nick’s request
to avoid any further drama, Foundation took a page right out of Slam
Jams book by bringing in Quikky’s former pitcher MJ to pitch
against her former team. Instead of creating another Slam Jams incident,
Coach Nick decided against protesting the shady move to avoid creating
more drama.
Bewildered by Foundation’s action Coach Nick and
the rest of the oversensitive Quikky’s took the field physically,
but not mentally. Without the mental game, the physical end was only
able to hold it together for 2 innings. In the top of the 3rd, Foundation
began taking full advantage of Quikky’s mental weakness. Despite
Deena being able to keep it together on the mound, Quikky’s
defense crumbled. Dropped balls, miscues, and poor communication allowed
Foundation to take the lead 4-2 going into the bottom of the 3rd.
As the game went on Quikky's was unable to shake things
off and gradually self destructed. Foundation continued to trickle
in runs and extended the lead 10-3 going into the bottom of the 6th.
In the bottom of the 6th, Kevin, Quikky's only spark, was able to
rally the wounded troops to get 2 runs back.
However, the 2 run stint would be Quikky's last breath.
With their heads down and their hearts deflated, Quikky's top of the
batting order ended the misery by going out 1-2-3 in the bottom of
the seventh. Instead of using MJ’s presence as a motivational
tool, Quikky’s let Foundation get the best of them. Quikky’s
loses 10-5 to Foundation in 7, and allows them to bring out the brooms.
July
30th: Quikky's Embarrasses Themselves
18-7 Against Their Notorious Rival Blue Moose (Spencer aka Slam Jams)
After Coming off the most pathetic loss under the sun,
Quikky’s was scheduled to face their undefeated rival Blue Moose
(Spencer) for the first time since the Peanut and Lloyd debacle. Despite
rumors that forced Coach Nick to wisely turn in a roster before the
game, this match up would begin a lot more civil then the last one.
With the recent departure of Quikky’s solid pitcher MJ, Deena
took the mound for the first time in 2 games in the top of the first.
Not wasting anytime, the former Slam Jams came running right out of
the gate full steam. Taking advantage of Quikky’s third different
defensive arrangement in three weeks, Blue Moose combined base hits
and walks to create an embarrassing 13-0 lead in the top of the 1st.
The 13 run 1st inning nightmare (the most runs allowed
by Quikky’s in one inning all year), put Quikky’s out
of the game mentally before they even had a chance to bat. Trying
to earn back some respect, Quikky’s was able to put one run
on the board in the bottom of the 1st to quickly end the shutout.
As the game went on Quikky’s defense finally settled down holding
the evil Blue Moose in the league to 14 runs through the sixth. Quikky’s
offense lead by Kevin’s aggressive base running forced Blue
Moose to through the ball around and allowed Quikky’s to eventually
cut the lead to 7 runs going in the top of the 6th.
In the top of the 6th, Blue Moose's bats, that had been
dormant since the first inning, awoke. Blue Moose scored 4 runs to
go ahead 18-7 and put Quikky's at check with the mercy rule. In the
bottom of the sixth Quikky's failed to extend the game to the 7th.
When it was all said and done, the 13 run 1st inning ended up being
the difference in the game. In six innings, Lloyd and the rest of
the peanut gallery were able to get the best of Quikky’s once
again, as they fall 18-7 to their bitter rival. Quikky’s only
hope for redemption this year is to make the playoffs.
July 23rd:
Quikky's Falls Miserably 18-5 to Fairview
Hospital and the Sun
Entering the game on their first win streak of the season,
Quikky’s was ready to face the undefeated Fairview Hospital.
Actually Quikky’s was not quite ready considering their starting
line-up was hindered by the absence of Deena their relief pitcher,
Preston their new power SS, Jay their power hitter, and Nikki their
RBI queen.
As Quikky’s took the field as home team in the
top of the 1st, they quickly realized that not only were they facing
a team that got moved down from the upper division but also the blaring
sun. The sun was so bright that the overpriced yellow safety ball
that Softball World requires everyone to use got lost in it. Not even
a $200 pair of Ray Bans or MJ's pink sunglasses could have helped
any one of the blind Quikky’s outfielders. Taking advantage
of the discombobulated Quikky’s outfield, Fairview got off to
early a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the 1st Quikky’s went 1-2-3
and failed to use the sun to their advantage.
In the top of the second Fairview continued to place
the ball in Quikky’s blind spots as they went ahead 9-1. As
the game went on Quikky’s felt more and more outmatched. By
the time the bastard sun settled behind the backstop the game was
already out of reach. Throughout the game, Quikky’s offense
fell victim to the frustration as they struggled to score enough runs
to stay in the game.
In the top of the fourth, the umpire failed to call
interference after Fairview’s third base coach thought it was
cute to catch a catchable foul ball in the vicinity of Quikky’s
3rd baseman Boyd. Play was stopped briefly as Coach Nick argued with
the umpire about the unfair ruling. However Nick soon realized that
he was fighting a loosing battle because the umpire’s Alzheimers
prevented him from recognizing Nick as the manager.
Quikky’s was so down and out that not even a cocky
blunder by Fairview’s third baseman, who tried to shake Quikky’s
hands prematurely thinking the game was over, couldn't motivate Quikky’s
to extend the game and let alone launch a comeback. Quikky's falls
miserably in 5 innings to Fairview Hospital 18-5 and to .500 in the
division.
July
16th: Quikky's Wins 2 in Row and Earns
Revenge Over the Former Asset 14-4
Can I have your attention please…Will the real
Asset Acceptance please stand up? Since last year’s tournament
upset, the former IDS rival Asset Acceptance split into two teams,
Last Chance Saloon (the better half), and Ameriquest (the lousy half).
Quikky’s already had their chance at Last Chance last season,
but failed to pull off the upset despite holding them to only 5 runs.
Now Quikky’s had their chance to seek revenge against the other
half, the struggling 0-2 Ameriquest. In the top of the first, MJ took
the mound for her first start of the season after coming off an impressive
late inning relief appearance last week.
Despite MJ's strong pitching, Quikky’s unsynchronized
defense allowed Ameriquest to get off to an early 3 run lead through
2 innings. However this was not the impressive Asset Acceptance of
old. Shaky pitching on Ameriquest’s part allowed Quikky’s
offense to flourish once again. Quikky's launched their massive attack
in the bottom of the 2nd putting up 7 runs off of walks and base hits.
Brandon's uncanny cameo might have even brought a little IDS magic
back. In the bottom of the 4th, Kevin’s aggressiveness allowed
him to earn another inside the park homerun extending the lead 11-4.
Coming up to bat in the bottom of the 5th with an 11-4
lead, Quikky’s hoped to quickly put a fork in the game. MJ lead
off the inning and reached first on an error. Mike came up to bat
next and followed with a walk. Next came Nikki, opting to hit instead
of taking the free base (:P), who reached first on an error. Now only
2 runs away from the ten run mercy rule, Kevin came up to bat and
was able to get the winning run home by dancing between first and
second after hitting a base hit up the middle. However, everyone (including
the umpire) failed realize that the game was over because they were
distracted by Kevin’s Eric Metcalf moves and the fact that he
got hit in the back of the neck with the ball. It wasn’t until
Coach Nick marched off the field from coaching third and pointed it
out the score to the umpire that the game was finally called. Quikky’s
14-4 victory over Ameriquest puts them at 2-1 on the summer season,
and enables them to partially heal some of last year’s wounds.
Quikky’s is also off to their first win streak of the season
with their second victory in a row.
July 9th: Quikky's Wins Their
First Game of the Summer Season By Defeating FC Towers 10-9
After coming up a day late and a buck short last week
versus the Screwballs, Quikky’s aimed this week versus FC Towers
to find the silver lining on the black cloud that has been hanging
over them all season. And there was no better way to help them find
it than by bringing abroad MJ, a power pitcher from the 9-1 spring
season champion Adelphia. Despite the new addition to the team and
the fact that Quikky’s only victory of the spring season came
versus FC Towers, they knew the game wasn’t necessarily going
to be a picnic.
Oddly enough, the game closely resembled last weeks
with the score going back and forth like a ping pong ball. In the
top of the 2nd, back-to-back inside the park homeruns by Quikky’s
RBI king and queen Kevin and Nikki, put Quikky’s ahead 2-1.
FC Towers answered back in the bottom of the 2nd with 4 runs putting
them ahead 5-2. Despite numerous walks by Deena, who struggled for
the first time this season, Quikky’s stellar defense kept them
in the game allowing Quikky's to go ahead 8-5 in the top of the 4th.
The three-man outfield, consisting of Kevin, Boyd, and Nick, was like
a brick wall. In left field, Kevin “the human vacuum”,
accounted for several phenomenal catches. But in spite of the heroics,
FC Towers managed to tie the score 8-8 in the bottom of the 5th. In
the top of the sixth, base hits allowed Quikky's to regain the lead
9-8.
With the lead 9-8 going into the bottom of the sixth
and with Deena suffering with a pulled groan, Coach Nick decided to
follow the philosophy of the great Chicago Bulls of the 90’s.
Their philosophy was “when the game is on the line give the
ball to MJ”. And that is exactly what Coach Nick did. With the
game on the line, he made the call to the bullpen and gave the ball
to MJ. In her first pitching appearance, MJ came in and made quick
work of FC Towers in the bottom of the 6th holding the 9-8 lead.
In the top of the seventh Quikky’s was able to
tack on 1 more insurance run which ended up being very crucial. Because
in the bottom of the seventh FC Towers was able to spark a rally,
score a run, and put the winning run on base. Flashing back to last
week, Quikky’s immediately feared a bad case of de-ja vu. However,
this week’s game would end a lot differently. With two outs
and the winning run at bat, the batter popped out to Nikki at third
who was able to secure the final out and Quikky’s first victory
of the summer season. Quikky’s 10-9 victory over FC Towers completes
a 2 game sweep on the year over the team who accounts for Quikky’s
only 2 victories of the year.
July 2nd: Quikky's Lets Their
First Victory of the Summer Season Slip Away 15-14
After a disappointing 1-9 Spring Season, Quikky's was
anxious to start the summer season fresh. Having lost 5 in a row,
Quikky's had high hopes opening the new season against the Screwballs,
a newbe into the Friday night Coed 1-A Division. Quikky's, who entered
the summer season with a combined team batting average of an all time
low of .383, actually came out swinging. However, Quikky’s was
once again plagued by bad attitudes and poor officiating. The entire
game went back and forth like a teeter-tauter. It was the kind of
game where you knew that the last person who had the ball was going
to win. Throughout the first 4 innings, the lead exchanged hands five
times. Quikky's had the lead 11-7 going into the bottom of the 4th,
but since the Screwballs where granted 5 outs by the umpire, they
were able to score two runs making it 11-9. In the top of the 5th,
Quikky's was able to pull away 14-9.
With the game clock winding down and the biggest lead
of the night, Quikky’s gingerly took the field in the bottom
of the 5th. As the inning went on the Screwballs mounted a 4 run rally
to make the score 14-13 and cut Quikky's lead to one. With the go
ahead run at bat, Quikky’s was able to end the inning and what
they thought was the game with a nice swooping catch off the grass
in RC by Coach Nick. As Coach Nick clung on to the ball and what he
thought was Quikky’s first victory of the summer season, he
and the rest on the Quikky's klan soon found out that there was still
2 minutes left on the game clock. Having heard the buzzer sound twice
during the last inning and taking into account the umpire’s
bias, Quikky’s immediately felt that they were victims of a
conspiracy. After confronting the commissioner it was discovered that
the beeps they heard were only the 5 and 3 minute warning signals.
Since Quikky’s had played the previous inning
like it was the last inning of the game, they played the top of the
6th like the game was over. They pretty much went 1,2,3, through the
heart of the order and failed to get any insurance runs which kept
the score 14-13.
In the bottom of the 6th, the Screwballs came up to
bat confident knowing that they only needed a measly 2 runs to walk
away with the victory. Quikky’s also knew that this was an achievable
task considering that they had given up at least 2 runs every inning
prior. As the inning went on, Quikky’s barely managed to hang
on allowing a guy came up to bat with two outs and bases loaded. At
this point the pressure was on because everyone knew that if Deena
were to walk him, 2 runs would score and the game would automatically
be over. With 2 strikes on him, the batter hit a fly ball in foul
territory on the first base side to Jaclyn who accidentally let the
ball slip out of her mitt. Close but no cigar. The very next pitch
the batter hit an unfieldable base hit up the middle to bring home
2 runs and the Screwballs first victory in their Friday Coed Division
I-A debut. Quikky’s suffers a painful 15-14 loss to the Screwballs
in their first game of the summer season and extend their loosing
streak to all-time low of 6 games in a row.
The highlight of the evening was Nikki's monsterous
3 run inside the park homerun which was the first inside the park
homerun ever hit by a girl for either IDS or Quikky's.
June 18th: Quikky's
Fails at their Last Chance to Get Out of Last
Coming off a rain out bye, and 3 disappointing losses
the week before, the 1-8 Quikky’s was set to take on the 2nd
place/8-1 Last Chance Saloon. Quikky’s came into the game with
nothing to lose. As the first 3 innings went by Quikky’s impeccable
defense returned from last season. Deena, in only her second pitching
appearance, continued to pitch solid.
Last Chance, coming into the game with only one loss all season, only
managed to trickle in 4 runs up until the top of the 4th. Despite
Quikky’s outstanding defense, their offense struggled once again
to find a rhythm. Down 4-0 in the bottom of the 4th, Nick came up
to bat with bases loaded and looped a ball into to center to put Quikky’s
on the board and within 2 runs. As the game went on, Last Chance kept
waiting for their opportunity to bust the game wide open and defeat
the last place Quikky's by the run rule. However, Quikky's continued
to shut them down and make them sweat with their strong defense. The
score remained 4-2 until the top of the sixth when Last Chance managed
to sneak in one more run making it 5-2.
After holding the score 5-2, Quikky's came up to bat
in the bottom of the 7th only 4 runs away from pulling probably the
biggest upset of the season. After changing jerseys three times because
of the all the sweat, Last Chance took the field bewildered at the
fact that Quikky's had shut them down and held them to only 5 runs.
But instead of Quikky's harnessing the “we just
held the 2nd place team to 5 runs” attitude, the “we have
nothing to play for” attitude they entered the game with prevailed.
Quikky’s managed to score one more run, but sloppy base running,
bad coaching, and horrible pitch decisions prevented Quikky’s
from spoiling Last Chance’s 1st place run. Quikky's put up a
good solid fight against The Last Chance Saloon, but came up 2 short
as they fell 5-3 and finish 1-9 for the spring season.
June 11th: Rain Postpones Quikky's
Last Game of their Miserable Spring Season
For the third time this season
rain contributes to dampening Quikky's pathetic spring season. With
an 1-8 record, rain and player absences have prevented Quikky's from
finding a rhythm. With this week scheduled to be the last game of
the spring season, Quikky's was hoping to finally tear the band aide
off. Now Quikky's will have to wait until next week where they hope
to finally put a fork in the former Asset Acceptance and in their
disappointing spring season.
June 5th: Quikky's
Falls to R&B and to Last Place in the Division
Quikky's Loses
to Blue Moose (Spencer aka Slam Jams) But Teaches Them How to Play
Fair
The twice-delayed match-up between Quikky’s and
the former Slam Jams was finally set to get underway until the recent
Quikky’s traders Peanut and Lloyd attempted to play versus their
former team. As Coach Nick and the Slam Jams coach met at the coin
toss, Coach Nick immediately confronted the opposing coach about his
recent roster acquisitions. The opposing coach proceeded to claim
that Peanut and Lloyd signed their roster and even provided a copy
of their roster with their signatures. Having read the manual, Coach
Nick immediately called him on the fact that since the roster had
to be turned in by the fourth game of the season, there was no way
Peanut and Lloyd could legally be on their roster.
After the dummy realized that Coach Nick had called
his pathetic bluff, he agreed to remove the two traders from the line-up
and Quikky’s took the field as the home team. But as Coach Nick
was getting in position in RC, he soon realized that there was still
trouble in paradise. Apparently, the opposing coach still felt he
could weasel the quitters duo into the line-up because he went into
the commissioners office to further debate the issue. With the commissioner
now involved in this heated debate, it was discovered that neither
team had officially turned in a roster. Since neither team had turned
a roster, Coach Nick had the option to call a double forfeit.
Since Coach Nick knew that Slam Jams was still in the
division race and another loss or one less game played wouldn't exactly
hurt Quikky’s, he putting his overwhelming desire to “just
take it to the field” aside and put the opposing team’s
back against the wall with the ultimatum of either take the two losers
out of the line-up or double forfeit.
Finally after 15 minutes of hype, the opposing coach made the wise
decision to protect their record and platoon Lloyd and Peanut allowing
the grudge match to get underway. Ironically had this game taken place
when it was originally scheduled Peanut and Lloyd would have been
playing for Quikky’s.
In the top of the first, Deena, in her Quikky’s pitching debut,
gave up a couple of walks that turned into 3 runs. As the game went
on Deena settled down, but Slam Jams was able to rack up runs off
of base hits. Quikky's, despite being riled up by Peanut and LLyod's
immature taunting, wasn't able to get anything going on offense and
remained scoreless until the bottom of the 5th. With the score 11-0
and the 10 run shutout on the line, Quikky's combined walks and hits
to score 4 runs and remain in the game showing Slam Jams that they
weren't done yet. But Slam Jams quickly answered back with 5 runs
in the top of the 6th making the score 16-4.
With the 10 run mercy rule once again on the line in the bottom of
the 6th, Jay broke out of his slump and rocked Slam Jams with a lead
off inside the park home run. However, that wasn't enough to get Quikky's
motivated to mount a 10 run come back. Quikky's couldn't even extend
the game to the 7th inning, as they fall 16-6 to their bitter rival
and look to seek revenge next season.
June 4th: Quikky's
Gift Wraps Blue Moose's Second Victory
With the recent departure of Peanut and Lloyd, and after
a three-week softball drought, Quikky’s actually showed up to
play versus the underrated Blue Moose (Van Ness). Quikky’s began
the game playing like the IDS of old, racking up base hits and providing
solid defense. Even the “I will not let a fence get in the way
of catching a fly ball” Kevin showed for the first time in left
this season. After dominating the first 5 innings with a 5-2 lead,
overconfidence quickly sunk the fragile 1-5 Quikky’s in the
bottom of the 5th. The spirit of the reborn Quikky’s came to
a sudden halt after Michael threw back-to-back submarines to first
base that prevented two routine outs.
Like a falling string of dominoes, Quikky’s kept
giving up walks and errors allowing Blue Moose to score 11 runs and
bust the game wide open. Like a balloon filled with too much air,
Quikky’s confidence and positive attitude filled up too quickly
and popped. After the devastating turn of events, Quikky’s had
nothing left. In their last 2 at bats in the bottom of the 6th and
7th, Quikky’s came up to bat with a “We already lost”
mantel, the same mantel that has plagued the team all season after
giving up the lead. So not only did Quikky's blow the game, they didn't
want to get it back. In the battle of the last place teams, Quikky's
falls 16-6 to Blue Moose (Van Ness).
May 21st: Storms Rain
on Quikky's Parade
The fourth annual battle of Parma has been postponed
until Saturday June 5th. The stage will remain set for Quikky's to
battle their rival R&B for the first time this season after sweeping
them 3 games and ousting them from the tournament last season. And
for the second time this season, Quikky's will have to wait for their
anticipated match up versus Slam Jams. With this week's rain out and
next week's bye, Quikky's hopes to use the time wisely to regroup
after losing friends and veterans Alena Sutton and Lloyd West.
